The Quotable Calvin Coolidge
Sensible Words for a New Century

by Peter Hannaford

The Quotable Calvin Coolidge

Sensible Words for a New Century

by Peter Hannaford

$10.50 – $19.50

Excerpts from Coolidge’s writings and speeches are eloquent on a broad range of topics and quite to the point for our times as well as his own.

Calvin Coolidge has long been dismissed as silent, and with little to say. A collection of over 200 quotations reveals the concise, direct, even eloquent way he stated his views on issues still relevant to the interests of contemporary Americans. The quotations, cited by date and circumstances, are organized alphabetically for use by speakers, writers, researchers, policy makers — in fact, by any with an interest in American history. Also included are Milestones in Coolidge’s life; a Selected Bibliography; and a listing of Coolidge Archives headed by the Calvin Coolidge Memorial Foundation in Plymouth Notch, Vermont.

“…informative and entertaining…” — Cal Thomas, nationally syndicated columnist

“If you know nothing about Calvin Coolidge, then this book … is the book for you… all the usual Coolidge quotes as well as … many that are less familiar…. context and date for every quotation.”– Jim Cooke, Coolidge interpreter, for amazon.com

“…some of Coolidge’s comments, rooted though they were in the 19th century rural Vermont, still ring true at this 21st century.” — Lee Pennock Huntington, Vermont Sunday Magazine

“Hannaford provides a good and concise biography of Coolidge and then lets Silent Cal speak for himself…many of the quotes … are not well known and demonstrate the breadth of knowledge and interest of the last president who wrote all his own speeches.” —
Christopher Graff, Associated Press

“…a book that proves Calvin Coolidge can still surprise us…gives ample evidence that Coolidge’s skill with words was not confined to the pages of his Autobiography.” — Tom Slayton, Editor of Vermont Life magazine
