This second of two volumes of “Letters to the Editor” of the Rutland Herald, features six Vermont soldiers, of whom three served in the infantry, two in the artillery, and one as a trooper in Vermont’s highly regarded cavalry regiment.

After a biographical introduction by the editor, each man tells his story – tales of campaigns from Louisiana to Virginia, from the Shenandoah Valley to the Carolina coast, They garrison lonely bayou outposts, stand to their guns in defense of Washington, are repulsed again and again at bloody Cold Harbor, and ride to glory with George Armstrong Custer. In the end, after long, hard years of war, some of these young Vermonters are among the very first Union soldiers to march triumphantly into fallen Richmond.
