Birthplace of The Jungle Books
by Stuart Murray

Illustration from the Jungle BooksWhen English author Rudyard Kipling moved to Vermont in 1892, he was on the verge of becoming the best-loved author in the world. With his American wife, Kipling built a home near Brattleboro, where he lived with his growing family and brought to life many of his major works. It was in Vermont that he wrote his most enduring creation, The Jungle Books. Stuart Murray tells the story of Kipling's four years in the Vermont hills, a time that began in great joy but ended in profound sorrow when a family feud led to an embarrassing courtroom confrontation. Kipling and his family left the United States, returning only once, and then to even deeper heartbreak. The story of these dynamic years unfolds with Kipling's own letters and memoirs, selected excerpts from his poetry, and the words of those who knew and admired him while he made his home in Vermont. More than thirty illustrations, including historical photographs and contemporary artwork--several by Kipling and his artist father--illustrate the little-known tale of Rudyard Kipling's years in America, a time he said "would be blessed to me for all my life."
